Sister is Manchester’s new innovation district. A £1.7bn investment into the city, its setting – the former University of Manchester North Campus and UMIST site – is steeped in science and engineering history.
Sister is a joint venture between The University of Manchester and Bruntwood SciTech. The project will see the transformation of the University’s former North campus into a new 4 million sq ft innovation district, a centre for science and technology.
Plot C is a £190 million development that will consist of two interlinked buildings. With easy access to Manchester Piccadilly and Oxford Road station Zone C will also bring improved walking and cycling routes and serve as a gateway to the wider Sister development.
The largest of the two buildings (C2) will be 20 storeys while the smaller building (C1) will be 12 storeys. Although largely two separate buildings, they will be connected at their base via an open shared lobby and social space providing public access through the building at lower and upper ground level.
This will include the integration of the heritage listed Hollaway Wall into a large community space within and outside the building.
The project also involves the redevelopment and activation of 10 disused railway arches.
Alt Fire have been appointed to develop the fire strategy from RIBA Stage 1 onwards and is providing Structural Fire Engineering services.
